A team of scientists from the University of Liverpool (13 April 2019) has found that a medication called Valtrex (Valacyclovir) can treat genital herpes. The study, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, was designed to test the use of Valtrex in women. Valtrex works by blocking the replication of viral DNA in the genital area. Valtrex is a popular antiviral drug used to treat herpes virus infections in the body. It is available in three forms: oral tablets, capsules and intravenous solutions. The Valtrex tablet is taken orally and is usually taken once a day, although there are also some patients who need to take a separate medication called acyclovir. The study’s lead author, Dr. James G. Campbell, M. D., from the University of Liverpool, said: “In the first three months of using Valtrex, the frequency of genital herpes was increasing and it was becoming more common than ever. This study is one of the first in the world to test the effectiveness of Valtrex in treating genital herpes. The study’s aim is to determine the effectiveness of Valtrex in reducing genital herpes infections and to assess the risk of recurrence of the infection.”
